After the French and Indian War, the King was in debt (didn’t have any money). The British Parliament (representative government in England) passed a tax on sugar.
The Sugar Act actually lowered the tax on sugar, but they were stricter in making people pay.
This was a way of making the colonists only be able to trade with Great Britain (England), which was part of the system of mercantilism.
