Oregon Country, 1846
.The Lewis and Clark expedition were the first Americans to discover the Oregon Country, but Britain had already laid claims to it so they agreed to share half with the U.S. “Oregon fever” broke out in the U.S., meaning many people wanted to travel west and settle in Oregon Country. President Polk promised he would annex Oregon and gain all the territory up to the map coordinates of 54° 40’(which is now in present day Canada). The slogan for Americans who wanted this land was 54’40’ or fight! The U.S. and Britain compromised with a peace treaty.
