The Original 13 Colonies
This territory, located on the eastern coast of North America, was acquired originally by England through the settlement of colonists coming to search for a new life, religious freedom or economic prosperity.
In 1776, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence and the territory became American. After the Patriots’ victory during the American Revolution, this territory was no longer under the power of British rule, and became the first territory and first states of what we now call the United States of America. This area is located along the Atlantic Ocean. |
As time went on, the colonies grew farther and farther apart in their beliefs.
The South relied heavily on cash crops and after the Cotton Gin was invented by Eli Whitney, Cotton became the king of all the cash crops. Slavery and Cotton production skyrocketed (increased a lot).
The North looked very different. Interchangeable parts, invented by Eli Whitney gave way to the Assembly Line and factory life. There was no slavery in the north, but labor was cheap and working conditions were difficult.
